Alex Bergman
Engineer

"I'm learning a whole new skill set, and I know that I'll be able to apply it the day I finish grad school."

As children, we're all asked the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" How did you answer?

Airborne Ranger

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Being put in charge of all engineering operations on a 378' Coast Guard cutter with a crew of 160. Very intense, and very rewarding.

How did you get your big breaks?

Persistence: not necessarily intellectual horsepower or agressiveness.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Look after your subordinates and they will take care of you. Simple but often overlooked.

What have you learned from your experience?

If you can manage people effectively, it's scary how deficient you can be in other areas of 'expertise' and yet still be successful. The more time I spend around those with corporate experience, the more I realize this is as true for the business world as it is for the military.

What most excites you about your job right now?

I'm learning a whole new skill set, and I know that I'll be able to apply it the day I finish grad school.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

Wealth, and have created a strong new product or initiative that will carry forward the business in the future.
