Lead Software Design Engineer in Test

"One of our team's activities was going out to a popular restaurant and game room. It was great to be able to challenge each other to pool. Well, one thing's for sure, we shouldn't give up our day jobs!"

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

The greatest opportunity that I've had at Microsoft thus far is becoming a test lead. This was something that I had never done before but wanted to explore at some point. This opportunity opened many doors for me and enabled me to explore different opportunities for growth.

How did you get your big breaks?

Internship at Microsoft: The summer after I completed my bachelor's degrees, I wanted to do something different than every other summer I had during college. Having come from an academic research background, I wanted to be exposed to what life was like working outside of academia. Plus, I wanted to experience the thrill of contributing to a project that would touch millions of people.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Live each day with purpose and honor.

What have you learned from your experience?

There are so many brilliant people here, so many resources, so many interesting projects, that you want to be able to soak up everything. You learn quickly, though, that during your internship you can only soak up a fraction of all of this. When you start as an intern at Microsoft, you set a few goals for the entire duration of the internship. Each day you come into work, you're working on solving problems to achieve those goals. As an intern in test, on a daily basis you read through product code to figure out the best way to test the given feature area and implement your own interesting algorithms for testing.

What most excites you about your job right now?

Since 2003 I've been working with the Avalon team, in the Imaging area. Now I lead a team of about six people testing the next generation application program interfaces in Imaging, Effects, and Media within Avalon.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

Moving forward, I see myself taking on larger challenges and broadening my scope. I'm very interested in working on hard testability questions.
