Security GM, product team

"I like to work hard and continually learn new things, so that could take me anywhere."

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Working at Microsoft: The people of Microsoft are phenomenal. There is so much opportunity to learn here.

How did you get your big breaks?

I recently managed the release of windows XP SP2 from architecture to ship. I led the charge. Executives took a risk on me, and I delivered.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Microsoft is a demanding place, you have to keep on your goals and treat people well. Take the high road. There are tons of decisions to make and lots of people to coordinate with. Taking the high road means constantly choosing the best for your team and your product.

What have you learned from your experience?

Not long after coming to Microsoft I worked on a version of Excel. Not long after the product ship, I walked past a window with a copy of Excel on a pedestal. It was such a surprise to see how the work I had done was now available to the world. I though, "I helped to that." It's easy to forget when you're working alone in your office the magnitude of impact you have on thousands of people.

What most excites you about your job right now?

How can I help our customers secure their environments? PCs are fun, but many people are afraid to use them for reasons such as viruses, privacy, security, etc. Computers are incredible tools to allow people to express creativity, ideas and communicate. I want to make computers safer so people can be free to utilize them without that fear.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

Right now I have a big job, and I want to see it through. As for the future, I'm interested in mobile devices. How can people in the future have a protected roaming identity?
