Mike Thomas
Tax Accountant

Everyone needs well trained help with their taxes.

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Deciding to work in tax law. It's a tough area because so the laws change so much, but I like that part. Plus, it's a job that seemed secure. It has proven to be secure compared to other industries I could have ventured into. Everyone needs well trained help with their taxes. I'm pretty safe from layoffs, downsizing, and outsourcing.

How did you get your big breaks?

A financial headhunter found me the position I have now.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Find a mentor.

What have you learned from your experience?

Anyone interested in this industry needs to be a multitasker, someone who can be detail oriented, and can keep everything straight in their head. You just have to be organized and know your stuff.

What most excites you about your job right now?

I'm constantly learning new things. The tax laws are so complex that I need to study up every year to keep on top of it all. I like that part- the continuing learning process.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

I'll continue in public accounting for another year, after which I'll switch to an internal position in the private sector. For now, public accounting is a good place to be for exposure and experience but I want to take that knowledge and apply it in the private sector.
