Janet Peach

"Just think of all the industries that need accountants. Whatever your interests are, accounting can be your door into those industries/jobs."

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Everyone in my family is an accountant. My parents, my sisters and I are all accountants. I guess that's because my parents taught us early about accounting and math. When it came to school, I did really well in those areas. People said I had an aptitude for numbers; I really just had two parents who passed along their knowledge of numbers (and their job passion) onto me.

How did you get your big breaks?

I went through a recruiting process in college. There's a high demand for accountants.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Double check everything.

What have you learned from your experience?

Just think of all the industries that need accountants. Whatever your interests are, accounting can be your door into those industries/jobs. Accounting can be the key to take you there. When I was younger, I didn't think about it like that, but it's really true. I have friends who work for nonprofit companies as accountants.

What most excites you about your job right now?

We're going through an audit this year for the investors. I get to exprience some variety in my work when I deal with the outside auditing team. I work for a company where I'm the only finance person, so I like having the opportunity to discuss financial aspects of my work with others. The audit gives me that opportunity.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

I hope to have my own business someday soon.
