Wendy Rigterink
Consultant

"Consulting itself can be frustrating. You're either swamped or you've got nothing to do."

How did you get your big breaks?

Met with a recruiter at college and decided to go for it after talking with her.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Work hard, work smart.

What have you learned from your experience?

Consulting itself can be frustrating. You're either swamped or you've got nothing to do. And you can work hard to make it a steady stream, but the industry doesn't really allow itself to do that.

What most excites you about your job right now?

The continuing education and training. It begins within the first month for all hires. We have a week-long class where you're split into different teams. They teach and then you go do it (a fictional case). Then you back to the home office and within 2/3 months there is a team training that discusses what the group does; presentations, exercises. Training is in different places. Everybody who joins the company goes somewhere for training. Experienced hires go to classes called "Global" (England, France, Germany, etc.). New hires are domestic and I went to Florida. Continual training, mandated to have 40 hours a year because Accountants have that and PWC is also an accounting firm so it extends to the consulting side. Any class you find, you can generally go. Sometimes a person goes to a class and then comes back and teaches a "Brown Bag" one hour session. I'm learing so much that will benefit me in any career I have in the future.
