Melissa Hill
Research Associate, Process Development Lab

This is my first job out of school. My main goal was to get a lot of experience.

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

One of the big things was working for a small company. When I started, it was just me and my boss in the process development lab. I had an opportunity to do a lot of different things. Everything that goes on in my lab I have a hand in. I do it. I learn it. In a lot of places I interviewed at, larger companies, it would have been a routine at work. I would have been doing the same thing every day, and I wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn as much as I have.

How did you get your big breaks?

I took this job because it was a small company. Of all the places I interviewed at, I thought that I would get the most experience here. This is my first job out of school. My main goal was to get a lot of experience. I didn't really know what I was getting into. I had worked for other places part-time during school, but it's hard to know exactly what you will be doing.?I really haven't been disappointed. My boss gives me opportunities to try everything. I've learned more in the past year than ever.?

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Experience is a very important thing. Go where you can gain the most experience.

What have you learned from your experience?

Tons. I learn something new every day!?I work in the process development lab.?My company has a process right now. It's a protein purification process. We work to make the process better, faster, to increase our yield. We also do a lot of purification, manufacturing the protein for other groups. We end up purifying it for them.?

What most excites you about your job right now?

It's very fast-paced. You can't slack off here. I work really hard. We get a lot done. We've gotten a lot accomplished.
