"...Sometimes you will be making models and sitting in front of a spread sheet- other times you will be talking to people at the client and strategising about how best to solve their problems."

How did you get your big breaks?

McKinsey tried to recruit me at college but at that time I wasn't interested. The next year, I decided to try it so I sent them my resume and eventually I got a job offer.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Be confidant but not arrogant- try to relax and think carefully about the questions asked- don't be afraid to ask questions in the interview. Demonstrate that you are aware that you lifestyle will need to flexible to accomodate the travel requirements of the job.

What have you learned from your experience?

The analysts role may vary- sometimes you will be making models and sitting in front of a spread sheet- other times you will be talking to people at the client and strategising about how best to solve their problems.

What most excites you about your job right now?

I really love my job. The best things are the incredibly talented and interesting people you get to work with. We have an incredibly interesting and diverse group: a rocket scientists, former comedy writer, Olympic rowers- a very accomplished group- 14 Rhodes Scholars in the office alone. I also like the exposure to top level executives in major companies. The prestige of the company I work for (Mckinsey) definitely helps on a resume. The worst thing is the number of hours and the travel requirements. Usually fly to a client on Monday and return home again on Thursday night.

What would you like to have achieved by the last day of your career?

I'm going to attend the Kennedy school because I want to work in non-profit or public sector. I hope to use all my knowledge gained in the private sector to good use in helping others.
