Jennifer Colombo
Associate Organic Chemist

It's a really good situation for me. I'm learning a lot.

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Working as an Associate Organic Chemist at Eli Lilly. I do small-scale laboratory reactions.

How did you get your big breaks?

I was recruited from school through job placement office. I had an interview at school. Then they sent me an application. I filled it out and then they invited me for an on-site interview. A couple weeks later they notified me that they had an opening. I interviewed for it. The interview was a jam-packed day. They are trying to get the best fit for the employee to feel comfortable in the lab. I knew I wanted to work in the pharmaceutical industry. I was trained at Wayne State in Chemistry. This job was a natural progression.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Be flexible. From time to time there will be situations where we need more resources to better do our research. To benefit the company and do better research people will move where needed.

What have you learned from your experience?

They try to fit you with the best lab situation possible. Right now I am working with the person who has a lot of experience. It's a really good situation for me. I'm learning a lot.

What most excites you about your job right now?

I like the employees I work with. Everyone is easy going and friendly, and helpful. It's a really good environment. I do good research. I definitely do important research that helps produce therapeutics.?I feel I get recognition for my efforts. We have a lot of recognition awards that fellow associates can nominate you for. The presidential award is an example. And there are other means to get recognized.
