Wendy Simon
Assistant Scientist I

Discover what it's really like working as an Assistant Scientist in the biotech and pharmaceutical industry.

As children, we're all asked the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" How did you answer?

Scientist

What have been the most defining moments along your career path?

Working at Pfizer. I had interviewed at a couple of other places and I really liked the people I interviewed with here. I knew some people in the industry who really talked it up, and I took a chance with them. I'm an Assistant Scientist, I Process Research (Chemistry) at Pfizer.

How did you get your big breaks?

Advisor at school told me about the job at Pfizer. He had had other students who worked there in the past.

What have you learned from your experience?

People stay on here and people also go on to Medical School or to Grad School. The turn-around rate is standard. Also, almost every department has an Intern. More than 1 per dept. They all get them. There are quite a few here. It's a great idea to be an intern. The interns do the same things that we're doing. It's sort of a training program.?I didn't have too much lab work when I was hired, but I think it's one of the most important things. Knowing, "this is what I want to do" is easier if you have had some experience doing it.

What most excites you about your job right now?

I definitely feel that I make a difference. Also, I really like the people I immediately work with. I really enjoy spending time with them. We hang out after hours. I met them when I came to Pfizer. This was a great decision to work here.?
