Karen Jacobs
Marketing Assistant

Learn more about working in marketing from an Experience Insider.

As children, we're all asked the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" How did you answer?

In the films and entertainment business.

How did you get your big breaks?

Graduated from UCLA and knew someone working at New Line. I came in to chat and coincidently that day someone gave 2 weeks notice.

What was the best advice you received when you were first starting out in your career?

Most people start however they can, mail room, etc. It's pretty much get your foot in the door and then keep your ears open for anything you hear coming up and be persistent. Inter-office job posting. Friendly company, talk to people, let others know you're interested in going into certain departments.

What have you learned from your experience?

Don't be intimidated to go up to even the heads of the company and talk to them because they're all very open and willing to help you.

What most excites you about your job right now?

My fellow co-workers and the company itself are really, really fun. Travel to New York office for press junkets.

On a scale of 1-10, how relevant was your academic major to your career? (1=not at all, 10=absolutely essential)
