Joann Polatta
Weekday Producer

Learn about broadcast journalism from an Experience Insider working in the industry.

How did you get your big breaks?

In high school, I worked at a television station, then got my communications degree and went back to that TV station to work. My first job was as a producer, full-time, at a station in Springfield MA. I was working three jobs at the time--I don't know how I did it (although living at home helped). I'm not even sure when I ate.

What have you learned from your experience?

It's a very fast-moving business. Can be frustrating and everyone expects a lot of you. Need to pay your dues--work weekends, nights, holidays. In the long run, however, it's very satisfying work. You're always keeping on top of what's going on--reading the news, watching TV, listening to the radio. You don't bring work home, but you're always doing homework. You've got to have a love of current events.

What most excites you about your job right now?

It's exciting. Never a dull moment. Love breaking news. I do the same job every day but it never looks exactly the same.

On a scale of 1-10, how relevant was your academic major to your career? (1=not at all, 10=absolutely essential)
