Executive Spotlight: Andy Dolich

TeamWork Online

President, Business Operations, Memphis Grizzlies (NBA)

So, what year was this?

  • "The Great Zachinni" is shot out of a cannon on Opening Night and delivers the first pitch
  • The first new manual out-of-town scoreboard in decades displays three centuries of baseball information.
  • A fantasy Play-by-Play booth operates, where a fan sits in the announcer's booth and calls an inning while the actual game is being played. An audio tape is recorded and provided to the participant with sponsor messages pre-loaded.
  • A new high-tech "Diamondvision" scoreboard is installed, a 30 x 40 foot television that shows instant replays, close ups and more.
  • Television sets are added to the concession stands to show the game while waiting
  • Radio feeds of the game are piped into both the men's and women's bathrooms
  • "BillyBall" is the marketing campaign starring Billy Martin who is returning to his hometown.
  • Speed pitch machines are installed in the lower concourse
  • Safeway sponsors the "Saturday Barbeque," the first 10,000 fans receive a free barbeque lunch. This plays to what is termed, "Johnny Appleseed Marketing", the system of growing fans from children through adults. Where else can you get four a family of 4, 4 tickets to a game, free lunch, free return subway pass, all for $14.00?
  • The Year of the Uniform give-away: Attend each and every promotional game, and you can receive an entire team uniform, from jersey, pants, socks, wrist bands, cap, bat, and finally a certificate for free adidas shoes.
  • The team's season ticket holder base rises from 326 to 16,000 equivalents!

What year was this? Would you believe ten to twenty years ago, 1981 - 1989? And who led this Renaissance of baseball in the Bay Area? Andy Dolich, then Vice President Business Operations for the Oakland A's.

Andy has moved with the Grizzlies to Memphis. Look again for Andy and his staff to once again create magic!
