Seven Steps to Success

Finding the right job is all about casting the right net. Employers come to our site every day to specifically hire college students and young professionals. Finding the right job is all about casting the right net.

You may not realize it, but employers are looking for you. You are lucky to be a job seeker in a strong labor market. Employers can't wait to show you why you should join their team! But employers can't find you until you've posted your experience resume in the job center. If you have an existing resume, or if you're starting from scratch, we've created seven quick steps to a fully searchable resume-which means it's easy for employers to find you. Here are some frequently asked questions to help you get started:

1. What's the first step I need to take to post my resume on
Go to and register. Registration takes two minutes, and is free to all users. If you're already registered, go to to create your resume.

2. I notice that I can't just "upload" my resume on anymore. Why is that?
While the PDF format is convenient for viewing formatting of existing documents (like cover letters and writing samples), these documents are only searchable by keyword, which makes it difficult for employers to find you. By using drop-down lists and check boxes we can make better matches between employers and candidates. As an added bonus, if you don't have an existing resume, we walk you through a seven-step resume creation process to ensure that you provide employers with the information they are looking for.

3. Are there any shortcuts when filling out my resume?
We set up the resume so you can fill it out in sections and can save your information after each step. If you have an existing resume, you can save extra time by keeping it open on your desktop so you can cut and paste elements from it into the text boxes on the experience resume.

4. What information should I be prepared to enter?
The resume is broken into seven steps: (1) contact information; (2) academic information; (3) work experience, including internships and summer jobs; (4) skills; (5) hobbies; (6) a description of your ideal job; and (7) existing documents. The seventh step allows you to cut and paste an existing document (a resume, cover letter, or writing sample) into a text box so it can be attached to your experience resume. Once you complete these steps, you'll have a neatly formatted resume that you can view, print, or see in text format. You should feel free to use your experience resume offline or on other websites or applications.

5. What is the point of the Career Objective? What if I'm not totally sure about what I want to do?
Don't worry! Your Career Objective can be as general as you'd like it to be. Most employers don't expect that you know exactly "what you want to be when you grow up." Instead, they are looking for some additional information about your interests and short-term goals. Some examples of career objectives are: "To use my writing skills in a full-time job," or "To join a team-oriented company and contribute in whatever way I can." Since entry-level job seekers aren't expected to have tons of work experience, employers consider the Career Objective as another way to pick the right candidate. Keep in mind that your career objective will be the first thing an employer sees next to your name, so take care when creating it.

6. After I've entered all my information, how easy is it to make edits later on?
You can always make edits to your resume. By going to the View Current Resume button, you can view your entire resume at once and click on any of the corresponding edit keys to make changes.

7. Once I've entered my information, what happens next?
If you choose to "post" your resume, employers will be able to search for you in the resume database. When your resume matches the criteria that they are looking for, employers will contact you using the information you have provided on your resume. If you don't post your resume, you will still be able to search for and apply for jobs, but employers will not be able to search for you.

8. If I'm already employed, how can I be sure my current employer isn't going to see my resume online?
Two ways: You can either hide your name and contact information on the Resume Status page, or you can elect to not post your resume, and use it for applications only.

9. I'm a freshman. Is it worth posting my information on
You bet it is. Employers say one of the main things they look for on job applications is internships. has an entire section of internships that all college students are encouraged to apply to. Regardless of your career aspirations, any internship is great experience and shows a future employer that you are ready for the real world.

10. What happens once I apply to a job or once an employer finds me in the resume database?
Even though all of your communications with employers will take place outside of our web site, we would love to hear about the results of your job search. Email us and let us know about your new job! We'll even send you at T-shirt!
