You've cleared the interview. Now it's time to say thanks. Here's how.

 
"Thanks for nothing" isn't the right approach...
 

She made you feel sick to your stomach, asked you questions you didn't know the answers to, and made you explain how a job in finance is related to your fine arts degree...and now you have to thank her nicely for making you squirm? Once you have made it through your job interview you still have one task left--the thank you note. And "thanks for nothing" isn't the right approach.

Some people think writing a thank you note is unnecessary, old-fashioned protocol, but a thank you note says much more than a simple thanks. The "thank you" part is only a guise. The real motive is to put yourself at the top of your interviewer's head and to convey your sincere interest in the position. It also is a chance to mention any information you left out of your interview or that is worth reinforcing.

How to
Your letter should be friendly and informal, but it should be typed, not handwritten. Try to keep the letter short and simple; there is no need to write another cover letter. Thank your interviewer for her time and consideration, because busy professionals like to be appreciated for the time they have given you. (It's not pandering, it's polite.) Let her know that you enjoyed learning more about the position and the company, and remind her of your qualifications. It would be helpful to mention any special characteristics that distinguish you from other candidates.

Finally, in your closing, make yourself available for any additional questions she might have and confirm when you will speak again. If she promised to respond to you in a week, for example, say, "I look forward to hearing from you next week."

The note should be printed on quality paper and sent by mail promptly after the interview. Email is acceptable if you want to get it there right away. Be sure to get the interviewer's card at your meeting so that you will have her proper title and address. And last, don't forget to proofread your thank you note carefully. Typos or sloppy language are not the lasting impressions you want to create.

Dear Ms. Johnson:

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I appreciated having the chance to discuss my experience in health care and to learn about ABC's current opportunities. Also, thank you for sharing your insights on starting out in this field. I found your thoughts very helpful.

As I mentioned in our discussion, I have a strong interest in the health care market, having focused my senior research project on the marketing of medical products. Using this experience, I feel well prepared to help ABC expand its sales as a member of the marketing team.

If I can supply you with any further information, please contact me at 312-213-1234. I look forward to hearing from you next week.
