Virtual Hollywood

By Topher Bordeau

A new crop of entertainment web sites are populating L.A., creating opportunities for recent college grads to get valuable industry experience, showcase their talent, research the field, or simply get a few laughs.

Whether you're a stand-up hopeful, a sketchbook genius, or an aspiring producer or director, these sites may be your opportunity to showcase your work or gain valuable hands-on experience as a full-time employee.

Maybe you have visions of heading to Hollywood to break into the entertainment world. The idea of toiling as an assistant (serving coffee, walking dogs, and shuffling papers) doesn't exactly thrill you, however. Maybe it's time to take a look at the entertainment web sites that are popping up all over Los Angeles.

Whether you're a stand-up hopeful, a sketchbook genius, or an aspiring producer or director, these sites may be your opportunity to showcase your work or gain valuable hands-on experience as a full-time employee. And if you're just in the mood for a little cyberslacking, you've just found the ultimate list of links.

Mediatrip.com
Do you stand out at stand-up comedy nights but pine for exposure in a bigger market? Mediatrip gives future stars the chance to make their own interactive site by uploading their films, animations, or comedy acts. Spotlights on community artists and a "Feature of the Day" segment keep your name in front of the crowds.

Atomfilms.com
Dedicated exclusively to showing its collection of more than 1,000 short films and animation pieces, Atomfilms provides aspiring filmmakers with a place to show their work. The site also pays royalties to those artists whose work is picked up for syndication, advertising, or consumer products.

Shockwave.com
At Shockwave, "work is what you do only after you stop playing." The site wants to make sure you never work, offering an endless variety of games, music, cartoons, puzzles, and other time-killers. More of a place to cyberslack than to make your big splash, the site does offer a few openings for those looking to break into production and writing roles.

Icebox.com
Icebox creates original animated content, and the site prides itself on bringing in only the best animators and writers. Artists previously employed by The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Buffy, and other mainstream shows develop the site's "Icebox Originals" cartoons. One of the funniest web animation sites around.

Ifilm.com
Launched in 1998, Ifilm.com showcases Internet films and also provides a comprehensive directory of movies for filmmakers, entertainment industry professionals, and film fans. "News and Features" keeps visitors up-to-date on the film scene, but also check out "Today's Cool Click" for the film pick of the day.
